In My Opinion, It is Okay to Cry...A Top Ten Tuesday Post

Hosted by the lovely crew of The Broke and The Bookish

I openly admit I am an emotional reader. To me, there is nothing better than latching onto a character--getting pulled into their trials and tribulations and FEELING their ups and downs. Along their pathways, I am so moved that I admit, I shed tears. To me, that is what GREAT books are all about. When I am so utterly and completely moved by whatever is written on that particular page, that the author can bring me to tears.

The circumstances for these tears could be for a multitude of reasons both negative and positive. Perhaps the characters have experienced a tragedy that is so profound that I am utterly devastated that I cannot help but be brought to tears by it. Perhaps other times, they experience such joy in an otherwise bleak life, that tears of joy well up in my eyes. And at other times, perhaps they loose their battles against whatever opposition they have faced--be it an illness or oppressive government or force. Whatever the reason, I am glad that I experience these tears and I appreciate that I find books and authors who are able to move me year after year.

Here are some books that have brought me to tears. They are not listed in any specific order other than what has leaped into my mind as I write this. Without a doubt, some of these will be easily identifiable to other readers but perhaps a one or two might surprise you since reading is such a personal experience.

Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Hallowed by Cynthia Hand
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccult
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Allegiant by Veronica Roth
My Sister's Bones by Cathi Hanauer
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
Draw Me In by Megan Squires

Though I am not finished with it completely (I am almost finished with it...) I have a feeling that Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell will be added to this list.

What books have made you cry recently? Any of the ones on my list surprise you? What do you think--should books make you cry or do you feel that it is something that we should not allow as readers? Sound off in the comments below (but respectful and mindful please). Also, be sure to leave me your link below if you participated so I can come visit you this week.

  1. The Fault in Our Stars has made every single list I've seen today, including my own. AH JOHN GREEN.

I really need to continue on with the Divergent series. I've only read the first one, but I've heard some of the things that happen in the following books and...well, I just need to read it. Awesome list! :)

  2. Allegiant and Fault in Our Stars both made my list too. I totally agree with you that I LOVE to cry when I read - if the author can touch me in that way, he or she has been successful!

  3. Great picks! I started Wintergirls a while ago, and it was so full of feels that I stopped. I couldn't take it. I am just starting Divergent, so I know to definitely pick up extra tissues before moving to the rest of the series. Here's mine if you want to stop by

  4. Good list - many of these are on other lists this week. I'm sad I haven't read any of these as I always love a good tearjerker. I love a book that can make me cry - that's a testament to how good/real it is!
